Mickey and Jo

Mickey and Jo are two wonderful Muscovy Ducks. Found by a NYC resident walking her dog in Inwood Hill Park, these two frightened ducks seemed ailing and in distress. Both had the tell-tale sign of having escaped from some sort of local “livestock” operation: their upper bills were cut off. The smaller duck was not using her right wing, and both had extremely pale bills and feet indicating malnourishment.

A friend of this sanctuary, along with one of our dedicated volunteers, managed to first catch the smaller duck and get her immediately to a vet. In examining her injuries, the vet surmised that she was hurt by being brutally kicked or hit in some way. Sadly, the wing had to be amputated.

A few days after surgery she was brought to Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary where her mate was already getting acclimated (he had proven a bit more elusive to the rescue team.) Upon being reunited, their joy and relief was palpable; they ran to each other making excited but gentle noises and lay their necks across each other as if embracing, to the awe and delight of our staff. They remain inseparable.

Now named Mickey and Jo, both are doing better and better! Jo gets around just fine with her one wing, and both are looking healthier each day thanks to the care, food, shelter, vitamins and love that they are now being given.
